Ok, so being the Twilight Mom has been the current rage….there’s the shirts, the FaceBook pages, the websites, the get-togethers….how much fun can that be?? Well, I suppose that’s in the eye of the 16 year old beholder. I mean, I remember the total dorkiness of my mom dropping me off at school. She thought she was awesome because she drove one of the first Mazda drop your top off drive a million miles an hour with the SOUNDS of THE 80’s GREATEST HITS blaring from the speakers. But, now that I’m the mom, that’s not even the case…right?? Nothing to with loving Twilight, right???? I mean, there doesn’t have to be any inter-facing with my daughter’s friends. AND, what more can a parent ask than to have such a topic to discuss with a teenager…I mean there’s everything from sex to school to single parenting to fitting into the group….great, right?
Of course, at the beginning, I didn’t know this. Being TheBookGirl and all, I was happy there was an interest in not just the book itself, but the process; the writing, the creative work and all that is in between. Then one day, in the midst of my work, (and WHY is it when you work at home, your family thinks you spend 99% of the day staring into space) she begged please-oh-please can we drive into town (which for the directionally retarded like me, is a big deal) so that I can listen to a book reading by Stephenie Meyer?? OH, fine… being TheBookGirl and all, I would have been a major tool to blow off any kind of book interest or event. So, off we went for my Steph to listen to a book reading. OME….if I had only known, how awesome could I be now in my Twilight Mom circle to say that I HAD BEEN to one of the original Twilight readings??? I was doing who knows what…but sure am pissed now that I wasn’t there!
Well, being Twilight Moms, we all have a pretty similar story of how we came into this group…this new way of life. And surprisingly, it doesn’t have as much to do with our kids than one would think. I find that most of the new moms come to the books through recommendations from friends, while pregnant, (kind of a common theme) or because someone has badgered them into “just read the first few chapters….really!” For me, I really do feel like a Twilight Mom, because it was my own Mini-Bella who in her own way, reached out for that thing that we could do together. She was thrilled when it began, and mortified when it took on a life of its own. But, really…how much of that is just being a teenager? I had to wonder when I watched her gag reflex kick in while I planned and plotted getting to the first day premiere of “New Moon” with “those cougar friends of mine.” And again when the standard OMG that shouldn’t be used by moms to begin with, changed into an extra shrill OME!! And, along came her girlfriends, who jumped on the Twilight bandwagon years after she did, who LOVED me….they just couldn’t believe there was a mom with a life-sized Edward Cullen cut out in their living room.
But, here’s our secret. Though it’s hard to remember, I guess my mom was a dork, too. And though my daughter’s eyes may have to have future surgery from the constant rolling they do now, if anyone else makes a comment about her mother’s more-than-pastime, she will be the first to go all Jacob on them. She can mock me, but it is hell to pay for anyone else, and what more can I ask for. Not only has she promised to not torment her brother at all during the three days of an upcoming Twilight convention, she actually asked me to go along for Prom dress shopping so she and her friends could help me find the perfect dress should “My Edward” show up to the Volturi Ball to sweep me away.
How much more could you want from a book??
